Among the following techniques which one is not suitable method for detecting the gunshot residue ?
Answer: D
The unsuitable technique is pyrolysis GC.
Gunshot residue is identified mainly from the primer elements lead, barium and antimony. Neutron activation analysis (NAA) and atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) measure these elements in hand swabs, and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX) finds the characteristic spherical particles containing all three, which is the preferred method today.
Pyrolysis gas chromatography breaks down polymers by heat and separates the fragments, and is used for paints, fibres and plastics. It cannot detect the metallic elements of gunshot residue.
