Consider the following statements about activity coefficients.
1. They equal one for every component of an ideal solution.
2. They may be greater or less than one for a real solution.
3. They are always dimensionless quantities greater than one.
Answer: D
The first two are correct. The third is wrong in its final clause, because negative deviations from Raoult's law give activity coefficients smaller than one, as in acetone and chloroform mixtures. Such systems release heat when they are mixed.
