Discussion
Consider the following statements about choosing between the two conventions for a standard state.
1. Lewis-Randall suits a component present in large amount.
2. Henry suits a dilute solute such as a dissolved gas.
3. The choice changes the calculated equilibrium composition.
Answer: C
The first two are correct. The third is false, and importantly so: the convention changes the numbers in the intermediate quantities but the physical equilibrium it predicts must be the same. Thermodynamics cannot depend on a bookkeeping choice.
