Correct answer: 1614
John Napier published his description of logarithms in 1614, in Mirifici Logarithmorum Canonis Descriptio. By turning multiplication into addition they transformed practical calculation, and they are the principle the slide rule works on. His rods, the bones, followed in 1617.
