Why does a catalytic bead sensor fail in an oxygen deficient atmosphere?
Answer: A
The measurement is a combustion, so with too little oxygen the gas does not burn and the sensor under-reads, dangerously, in exactly the atmosphere where flammable gas is most concentrated. Above the upper explosive limit the same failure occurs. This is why instruments for confined spaces read oxygen alongside flammable gas, and why infrared sensors, which need no oxygen, have displaced pellistors in many applications. The catalyst is not dissolved, and the bridge balances regardless.
