Statement I: Selective non-catalytic reduction achieves higher removal than the catalytic route.
Statement II: It operates without a catalyst in a narrow furnace temperature window.
In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer.
Answer: C
Correct answer: Statement I is incorrect but Statement II is correct
Statement II is correct: the non-catalytic route injects ammonia or urea directly into the furnace and depends on a temperature window of roughly 850 to 1100 degrees, below which the reaction is too slow and above which the reagent is simply oxidised to more nitrogen oxide. Statement I inverts the comparison. It achieves only 30 to 50 per cent removal against the catalytic route’s 80 to 90 - its attraction is its low capital cost, not its efficiency.
