Which of the following can remove particulate as well as gaseous pollutants from air emissions ?
Answer: A
A wet scrubber can remove both particulate and gaseous pollutants.
A wet scrubber brings the gas stream into close contact with a liquid, usually water or an alkaline solution. Particles are captured by impaction on droplets, and soluble or reactive gases such as sulphur dioxide, hydrogen chloride and ammonia are absorbed into the liquid. A venturi scrubber is mainly a particle collector and a packed tower mainly a gas absorber, but scrubbers as a class do both.
Cyclones, electrostatic precipitators and bag filters are particulate collectors only. They separate particles by centrifugal force, electric charge or filtration, and let gases pass through untreated.
