Discussion
Consider the given statement and say which three out of the four factors are correct.
“The concepts of Hattner and Schluter appear somewhat antithetical on first sight, a closer scrating reveals otherwise.”
(i) Both were concerned about the variations in the character of areas on the earth surface.
(ii) Both recognized that there were distinctly different kinds of areas on the earth.
(iii) Both stressed the ways in which the features of a region reflected the basic patterns of the physical earth.
(iv) Both believed that each earth area showed a certain degree of uniqueness that could be defined.
Answer: C
The key gives (i), (ii) and (iv) are correct.
The statement is about two German geographers, Hettner, who took geography as the science of areal differentiation of the earth's surface, and Schluter, who took its object as the visible landscape. Three claims fit both: both were concerned with how the character of places varies over the earth's surface (i); both recognised that the earth is made of distinctly different kinds of areas (ii); and both held that each area has a degree of uniqueness that can be defined (iv).
Claim (iii), that both stressed how a region's features reflect the basic patterns of the physical earth, is the one left out. Schluter's concern was the visible landscape, including what people built on it, and Hettner's regional study covered human as well as physical phenomena, so neither can be said to have tied regional features to the physical earth in particular. The other options all include (iii).
What could and could not be confirmed: I could not find the source passage for the statement, so the choice of (iii) as the odd one out rests on this reasoning and on the key, not on a located quotation.
