Which type of regions can be best analysed by "Principal Component Analysis" ?
Answer: B
Principal component analysis is best suited to formal regions.
A formal (uniform or homogeneous) region is one whose areas share similar characteristics, often across many variables at once. Principal component analysis reduces a large set of correlated variables, such as income, literacy, employment and housing, to a few independent components, and areas can then be grouped by their component scores into regions that are homogeneous on many measures together.
A functional (nodal) region is defined by flows and interaction with a centre and is analysed with flow and gravity methods. A planning region is defined for administration, and 'non-developed region' is not a class defined by multivariate similarity.
