A scale of 1 : 50,000 means 1 cm on the map is 50,000 cm on the ground.
\[ \begin{aligned} 1\ \text{cm} &= 50{,}000\ \text{cm} = 0.5\ \text{km} \\ 2\ \text{cm} &= 2 \times 0.5 = 1\ \text{km} \end{aligned} \]
5 km and 10 km would need scales of 1 : 250,000 and 1 : 500,000, and 20 km would be 1 : 1,000,000.
