Which term describes an atmosphere in which isobars and isotherms coincide?
Answer: D
In a barotropic atmosphere density depends only on pressure, so isobaric and isothermal surfaces are parallel and the thermal wind vanishes, leaving no vertical shear of the geostrophic wind. A baroclinic atmosphere is the opposite case and is where the available potential energy driving mid-latitude weather resides. Isentropic refers to constant potential temperature, and neutral stratification is a statement about the vertical lapse rate. A limit that survives making every external component ideal is an intrinsic one, and worth knowing for that reason.
