Which term describes the flow at the entrance region of a straight jet streak?
Answer: C
Air accelerating into the jet entrance is temporarily out of balance, so an ageostrophic component appears directed across the flow, and mass continuity closes the circulation with ascent on one side and descent on the other. In the northern hemisphere the entrance region has ascent on the right-hand side looking downstream. These four-quadrant circulations are among the most useful diagnostics in operational forecasting. The quantity that varies and the quantity that does not are worth naming before any substitution is attempted.
