Discussion
A gas mixture is 25 mole per cent A with a heat capacity of 40 and 75 per cent B with a heat capacity of 20 joules per mole kelvin. What is the mixture heat capacity?
Answer: A
A quarter of forty plus three quarters of twenty gives ten plus fifteen. Taking the simple average of forty and twenty would give thirty and ignores the very different amounts present. The weighting must always follow the composition.
