Discussion
Match each mechanism or model with what it assumes.
List I
A. Langmuir-Hinshelwood
B. Eley-Rideal
C. Mars-van Krevelen
D. BET isotherm
List II
1. lattice oxygen taking part in the reaction
2. both reactants adsorbed before they react
3. multilayer adsorption used for area measurement
4. one adsorbed species reacting with one from the gas
Answer: C
Correct answer: A-2, B-4, C-1, D-3
Four models, three of mechanism and one of measurement. Langmuir–Hinshelwood has both reactants adsorbed before they meet on the surface. Eley–Rideal has one adsorbed species struck by one arriving directly from the gas. Mars–van Krevelen has the catalyst’s own lattice oxygen consumed and then replenished, which is how selective oxidation catalysts work. BET is not a mechanism at all but the multilayer adsorption model used to measure surface area.
