Consider the following statements about catalytic reaction kinetics.
1. A power law fit may describe data well without any mechanistic content.
2. A Langmuir-Hinshelwood form carries mechanistic assumptions.
3. A good fit proves the assumed mechanism is correct.
Answer: B
Correct answer: 1 and 2 only
Statements 1 and 2 are correct: a power law can fit data well while asserting nothing about mechanism, and a Langmuir–Hinshelwood form does embed assumptions about what adsorbs and what reacts. Statement 3 is the error the other two set up - several mechanisms commonly fit the same data within experimental error, so a good fit is consistent with a mechanism and never proves it.
