The Saraswati Samman was instituted by the K.K. Birla Foundation.
Founded in 1991, it honours an outstanding literary work published in the previous ten years in any Eighth Schedule language. The same foundation gives the Vyas Samman for Hindi and the Bihari Puraskar for Rajasthani writing.
