Assertion (A): Chloride-based accelerators are prohibited in reinforced concrete.
Reason (R): Chloride ions break down the passive film protecting the steel and cause corrosion.
Answer: C
Correct answer: Both A and R are true, and R is the correct explanation of A
Both are true and the reason is the mechanism. The pore solution’s high alkalinity holds a passive oxide film on the steel; chloride ions penetrate that film locally and initiate pitting, and the rust formed occupies several times the volume of the steel consumed, so it splits the cover off. Calcium chloride is the cheapest and most effective accelerator known, and is barred from reinforced work for exactly this reason.
