Which correction must an aircraft apply when flying in very cold air?
Answer: C
In air colder than the standard atmosphere the pressure surfaces are lower than the altimeter assumes, so the aircraft is lower than indicated and the indicated altitude must be increased to maintain terrain clearance. Corrections of several hundred feet are required in extreme cold. The effect is the vertical analogue of the high to low pressure hazard. Most errors here come from carrying a result across from a neighbouring case where it does not hold.
