The height (above mean sea level) corresponding to the atmospheric pressure 500 hPa will be close to :
Answer: C
The 500 hPa level lies at about 5.5 km.
Pressure falls roughly exponentially with height, halving about every 5.5 km. Since mean sea level pressure is about 1013 hPa, half of it, about 500 hPa, is reached near 5.5 km; this is why the 500 hPa chart is the standard mid-troposphere map.
1.5 km is the typical height of the 850 hPa level. About 10 km corresponds to the 250-300 hPa levels near the jet streams, and 18 km lies near the 70-100 hPa region at and above the tropical tropopause.
