Assertion (A): An autocatalytic reaction is one of the few cases where a CSTR is smaller than a PFR.
Reason (R): The CSTR can be held at the composition of maximum rate throughout its volume.
Answer: C
Correct answer: Both A and R are true, and R is the correct explanation of A
Both are true and the reason is the mechanism. An autocatalytic rate is low at the start, because there is little product to catalyse it, rises to a maximum and falls again as reactant is consumed. A CSTR can be operated with its entire contents sitting at that maximum, whereas a PFR must pass through the slow initial region. That is why the optimal arrangement is often a CSTR to the rate maximum followed by a PFR to finish.
