MPEG stands for Moving Picture Experts Group.
MPEG is a working group of ISO and IEC, set up in 1988, that develops standards for compressing audio and video, such as MPEG-1 (which includes MP3), MPEG-2 and MPEG-4.
The other expansions change 'Experts' to 'Effect' or 'Group' to 'Guide'; the standards body is a group of experts.
MPEG formats are used in digital television, DVDs and online video, and MP3 is short for MPEG-1 Audio Layer III.
