Discussion
Consider the following statements about the Kutta condition.
1. It requires the flow to leave the trailing edge smoothly.
2. It selects a unique value of circulation for a given shape and incidence.
3. It applies only at supersonic speeds.
Which of the statements given above is or are correct?
Answer: A
The condition is a subsonic, incompressible construct used to close the potential-flow problem, and it does both of the things the first two statements describe. It has no role in supersonic airfoil theory, where the flow is governed by wave relations instead.
