It was Alberuni.
Abu Rayhan al-Biruni came to India with Mahmud of Ghazni's campaigns, learned Sanskrit and spent years studying Indian astronomy, mathematics and philosophy. His Kitab-ul-Hind is the most careful foreign account of India before the modern period.
