Mahendravarman I began the rock-cut mandapas, Narasimhavarman I cut the rathas at Mahabalipuram, and Rajasimha built the structural Shore Temple and the Kailasanatha at Kanchipuram - the whole progression from cave to free-standing temple in about a century.
