Less than 30 per cent of India's population is below the poverty line.
The Tendulkar estimate put it at 21.9 per cent in 2011-12, down from 37.2 per cent in 2004-05. The figure depends heavily on where the line is drawn, which is why successive committees - Lakdawala, Tendulkar, Rangarajan - have produced different numbers.
