Under Article 343, the official language of the Union is
Answer: A
Correct answer: Hindi in the Devanagari script
Article 343 declares the official language of the Union to be Hindi in the Devanagari script, with the international form of Indian numerals. It provided that English would continue for official purposes for fifteen years from the commencement of the Constitution, that is until 1965, after which Hindi alone would be used. Opposition in the non-Hindi-speaking states, and violent protests in Tamil Nadu in 1965, led to the Official Languages Act of 1963 and its amendment in 1967, which provide that English may continue indefinitely alongside Hindi for Union purposes. Two related points are frequently confused with this. India has no national language; the Constitution uses only the term official language. And the Eighth Schedule lists 22 languages, which is a different category again, carrying rights of representation and of use in examinations rather than official status. States choose their own official languages under Article 345.
