A room of volume \( 60 \ \mathrm{m^3} \) is ventilated at \( 90 \ \mathrm{m^3/h} \). The air exchange rate is
Answer: A
Correct answer: 1.5 air changes per hour
The air exchange rate is the ventilation flow divided by the volume:
\[ \frac{90}{60} = 1.5\ \mathrm{h^{-1}} \]
The units confirm it: cubic metres per hour over cubic metres leaves per hour, so the rate is a frequency rather than a flow. Its reciprocal is the nominal time constant - here forty minutes - which is the period in which the concentration would fall to \( e^{-1} \) of its value after a source stopped.
