ERNET India, begun in 1986 with UNDP support and now a scientific society under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, was India's first internet network. It connects academic and research institutions, and runs the .ac.in, .edu.in and .res.in domains.
The 'Entertainment' expansions are invented, and 'Educational Reference Network' drops the research purpose that the R stands for.
