Which one of the following are correct ?
(i) Tertiary sources - New knowledge is first reported
(ii) Primary sources - Don't contain new information
(iii) Reference sources - Don't warrant continuous reading
(iv) Secondary sources - Assist in locating primary sources
Answer: C
(iii) and (iv) are correct.
Reference sources such as dictionaries, encyclopaedias and directories are consulted for specific facts and are not meant to be read through continuously (iii). Secondary sources such as indexes, abstracts and bibliographies organise and point to the primary literature, helping users locate it (iv).
Statement (i) is wrong: new knowledge is first reported in primary sources such as journal articles, patents and reports, not in tertiary sources, which guide users to primary and secondary sources. Statement (ii) is wrong for the same reason: primary sources are exactly those that contain new information.
