What is the drawback of the Nujol mull technique?
Answer: B
Mineral oil is a hydrocarbon, so it contributes strong bands near 2900 and 1450 that conceal any of the sample's own in those regions. It does not dissolve most solids, absorbs only in specific regions, and is inert towards the plates. The standard remedy is to run the sample a second time in a fluorinated oil, which is transparent where Nujol is not - covering the whole spectrum between the two runs. A single measurement chosen to respond to the one asymmetry beats several that respond to shared behaviour.
