The similarity to a photocopier is exact rather than approximate: both charge a photosensitive drum, discharge it selectively to form a latent image, develop it with toner and fuse the toner to the paper with heat.
The difference is only in how the latent image is made - a laser scanning the drum against a reflected optical image. An ink-jet works quite differently, spraying droplets, and "non-impact printer" is the wider class both belong to rather than the particular technology.
