In flame weeders, at what angle the burners are mounted with the horizontal, so that blue hot flame can be directed to the ground on the grass and weeds among plants?
Answer: A
The burners are mounted at 30°-45° to the horizontal.
A flame weeder directs a hot LPG flame at the weeds, which are killed by heat that ruptures their cells rather than by burning them to ash. Mounting the burners at an angle of about 30 to 45 degrees with the horizontal points the blue, hottest part of the flame at the ground and the weeds near the plant base, while keeping it from rising onto the crop canopy.
Angles of 10 to 20 degrees lay the flame almost flat and spread it too thinly, while 60 to 80 degrees points it almost straight down into the soil, so the paper's range in between is the working setting.
