When two perpendicular forces 3 N and 4 N act on a body at rest, it is accelerated to 2 ms-2. The mass of the body is
Answer: B
The mass of the body is 2.5 kg.
Perpendicular forces combine by Pythagoras, and Newton's second law then gives the mass.
\[ \begin{aligned} F &= \sqrt{3^{2} + 4^{2}} = 5 \text{ N} \\ m &= \frac{F}{a} = \frac{5}{2} = 2.5 \text{ kg} \end{aligned} \]
3.5 kg comes from adding the forces directly (7 N), which is wrong for perpendicular forces, and 1.5 kg or 2 kg use only one of them.
