Active engagement means that students inquire, explore and question.
Engaged learners take part in building their own understanding: they ask questions, investigate, try out ideas and discuss them with others.
Rote memorizing facts is passive learning. Valuing marks and competition is extrinsic motivation, not engagement with ideas. Treating the textbook as the only source of knowledge closes off the exploration that active learning depends on.
