Two quite different rules govern the letters and the numbers here. Give the term that follows.
C1, F8, I27, L64, ?
Answer: A
Correct answer: O125
Two rules run together. The letters advance three places at a time: C, F, I, L, so the next is O. The numbers are 1, 8, 27, 64 - the cubes of 1, 2, 3 and 4 - so the next is the cube of 5, which is 125. The term is O125. O100 mistakes the cubes for squares, which agree at the first two terms and diverge sharply afterwards. Cubes and squares agree at 1 and diverge at once afterwards, so checking the second term is enough to tell the two rules apart.
