Each position here is a little more than double the one before. Which letter follows?
A, C, G, O, ?
Answer: A
Correct answer: E
Each position is double the last plus one: A is 1, C is 3, G is 7, O is 15. Next is 31, which exceeds 26, so it wraps to 31 minus 26, that is 5, which is E. The doubling is easier to see if the positions are written as one less than a power of two: 1, 3, 7, 15, 31. Without the wrap the series has no next term. Writing the positions as 1, 3, 7, 15, 31 shows them to be one less than the powers of two, which makes the next term immediate.
