Refer to the following number and symbol string and answer the question. Counting to be done from left to right only.

How many such symbols are there each of which is immediately preceded by a number and also immediately followed by a symbol?

Go through the string 1 3 @ $ 5 6 & 5 % $ # 1 2 # % # 2 * 5 3 @ 4 $ & * and check each symbol for a number before it and a symbol after it. The @ after 3 is followed by $, so it counts. The % after the second 5 is followed by $, so it counts. The # after 2 is followed by %, so it counts. The $ after 4 is followed by &, so it counts. The other symbols fail: $ after @ and the # after $ follow symbols, the & after 6 and the * after 2 are followed by numbers, and the @ after 3 is followed by 4. There are 4 such symbols, option (D).
