Which of the following are the data analysis methods used for user studies ?
(i) Statistical analysis
(ii) Citation analysis
(iii) Semantic analysis
(iv) Facet analysis.
Answer: A
The University's key gives (i) and (iii), statistical analysis and semantic analysis.
Statistical analysis is the usual quantitative treatment of questionnaire and use data in a user study: counts, percentages, means and tests. Semantic analysis is read here as the qualitative interpretation of what users say or write in interviews and open answers. I could not find a standard text that names "semantic analysis" in this list, so this half of the key rests on the University's reading.
Facet analysis (iv) is a classification technique used to build subject schemes, not a way of analysing data from users, so options B and C fail. Citation analysis (ii) appears in the user-study literature as an indirect method of finding what a community uses (INFLIBNET's course material lists it with library records analysis), so it is a way of collecting use data rather than analysing responses, which is why the key leaves it out and option D is not chosen.
