Discussion
‘The Apologie for Poetrie’, generally called the ‘Defence of Poesie’ by Philip Sidney appeared in answer to a pamphlet called ‘The School Of Abuse’ (1579). Who wrote this pamphlet?
Answer: C
Stephen Gosson wrote The School of Abuse (1579), a pamphlet attacking poetry, plays and music, and Sidney's Apology for Poetry is generally taken as an answer to it. Chapman, Drayton and Raleigh were poets of the age but are not the author of this pamphlet. Gosson, a former playwright who became a Puritan, attacked the theatre in The School of Abuse (1579), and Sidney replied in An Apology for Poetry, which was published after his death in 1595. Chapman is known for his Homer, Drayton for Polyolbion, and Raleigh for The Ocean to Cynthia.
