Research can be classified in all the above ways.
Each option classifies research on a different basis. By purpose, research is basic (adding to knowledge), applied (solving practical problems) or action research (improving a particular practice). By the kind of data, it is quantitative (numerical) or qualitative (descriptive). By method, it is philosophical, historical, survey or experimental.
Since all three schemes are standard in research methodology and do not exclude each other, no single option gives the whole answer, and 'All the above' is correct.
