The first step of research is Identifying a problem.
Research begins when the researcher identifies a problem, a gap or difficulty that needs investigation. Only then can it be defined, delimited and formulated as a research question, followed by the review of literature, hypotheses, design, data collection, analysis and conclusions.
Selecting a problem presupposes that problems have already been identified, examining a problem is part of the later investigation, and solving it is the end of the process, not its first step.
