The 31P{OH} NMR spectra of HPO(OH)2 and H2PO(OH) (I = 3p, 1H = 1/2) shows respectively :
Answer: A
The spectra are a doublet and a triplet.
With the O-H protons decoupled, only the protons bonded directly to phosphorus split the 31P signal, through the large one-bond P-H coupling. Each signal shows n + 1 lines for n equivalent protons of spin 1/2.
- Phosphorous acid, HPO(OH)2, has one P-H bond: n = 1 gives a doublet.
- Hypophosphorous acid, H2PO(OH), has two P-H bonds: n = 2 gives a triplet.
Option C reverses the two, and options B and D treat the acids as having the same number of P-H protons.
