If \(A = \begin{bmatrix} 2 & 1 \\ 0 & 2 \end{bmatrix}\), what would be the value of determinant A ?
Answer: A
The determinant is 4.
For a 2 by 2 matrix, \(\det\begin{bmatrix} a & b \\ c & d \end{bmatrix} = ad - bc\):
\[ \det A = 2 \times 2 - 1 \times 0 = 4 \]
A is upper triangular, so its determinant is also just the product of the diagonal entries, \(2 \times 2 = 4\). The value 2 multiplies only one diagonal entry, and 0 or 1 come from subtracting wrongly.
