Which two signs should be interchanged to make the following equation correct?
100 ÷ 20 + 67 − 64 × 16 = 2063
Answer: A
Interchanging ÷ and × makes the equation correct. The equation then reads \[ 100 \times 20 + 67 - 64 \div 16 \] \[ = 2000 + 67 - 4 = 2063 \] which equals the right side. Interchanging + and − gives 100 ÷ 20 − 67 + 64 × 16, which is 5 − 67 + 1024 = 962. Interchanging × and − gives 100 ÷ 20 + 67 × 64 − 16, which is 5 + 4288 − 16 = 4277. The pair ÷ and + gives 100 + 20 ÷ 67 − 64 × 16, which is a negative value. Only the first pair gives 2063.
