If × stand for −, ÷ stands for +, + stands for ÷ and − stands for ×, then arrange the following in increasing order :
1. 15 − 5 ÷ 5 × 20 + 10
2. 8 ÷ 10 − 3 + 5 × 6
3. 6 × 2 + 3 ÷ 12 − 3
4. 3 ÷ 7 − 5 × 10 + 3
Choose the correct answer from the code given below :
Answer: B
The increasing order is 2, 4, 3, 1.
Replace the signs (× becomes −, ÷ becomes +, + becomes ÷, − becomes ×) and evaluate with division and multiplication first:
- 15 × 5 + 5 − 20 ÷ 10 = 75 + 5 − 2 = 78
- 8 + 10 × 3 ÷ 5 − 6 = 8 + 6 − 6 = 8
- 6 − 2 ÷ 3 + 12 × 3 = 6 − 0.67 + 36 = 41.33
- 3 + 7 × 5 − 10 ÷ 3 = 3 + 35 − 3.33 = 34.67
From smallest to largest: 8 (2), 34.67 (4), 41.33 (3), 78 (1). Codes that put 1 or 4 first, or place 1 before 3, do not match these values.
