What must be true of the diagonal entries of a skew-symmetric matrix?
Answer: B
Since the transpose is the negative of the matrix, each diagonal entry must equal its own negative, and only zero satisfies that. It follows that the trace of a skew-symmetric matrix is necessarily zero, whatever its off-diagonal entries may be.
