The first amendment to Article 19(1)
(a) of the Indian Constitution was mainly aimed to include ______ as a cause for reasonable restriction.
Answer: A
The First Amendment (1951) to Article 19(1)(a) added 'public order' (along with friendly relations with foreign States and incitement to an offence) as grounds for reasonable restrictions on freedom of speech and expression.
Censorship, newspaper registration and the licensing of printing presses are not the grounds added; in fact the Supreme Court in Romesh Thappar and Brij Bhushan (1950) had struck down measures of pre-censorship, which led to the amendment.
