Assertion (A) : Chip select is a signal which allows multiple chips to be connected to the database.
Reason (R) : The chip select enables the pins of the chip to make transitions between connected and high impedance states.
Answer: A
Both (A) and (R) are true and (R) is the correct explanation of (A).
Many memory and peripheral chips share the same data bus (printed 'database' in the paper). The chip select input lets the processor enable only the one chip it is addressing, so several chips can be connected to the bus without conflict. That is statement A.
It works because chip select switches the chip's data pins between being connected to the bus and a high-impedance state, in which they are effectively disconnected. A chip that is not selected therefore does not drive the bus. Since R gives the mechanism behind A, it explains A.
