2. impregnate the fabric with caustic liquor
3. neutralise with acid and rinse
4. hold it under tension on the stenter chain

Tension must be maintained through the wash boxes or the fabric shrinks as the caustic is removed and the lustre is lost. Neutralisation is last and removes the final traces of alkali. The wash boxes sit inside the tensioned section.
