What is the main purpose of a Schottky diode in semiconductor applications ?
Answer: B
A Schottky diode is used mainly for high-speed switching.
It is a metal-semiconductor junction, so current is carried almost entirely by majority carriers. There is no stored minority-carrier charge to remove when the diode turns off, which makes its reverse-recovery time extremely short; it also has a low forward drop of about 0.2-0.4 V. That is why it appears in switch-mode power supplies, clamps in Schottky TTL and RF detectors.
Voltage regulation is the job of a Zener diode, temperature sensing uses thermistors or the temperature coefficient of an ordinary junction, and a diode is a two-terminal device with no gain, so it cannot provide power amplification.
